I’ve seen the trailer for the new film, “Wild Mountain Thyme” a few times now and still can’t quite believe this movie was made at all and I can’t believe these actors are actually starring in it. Emily Blunt, who isn’t Irish, plays the stubborn Irish lassie. Blunt is a wonderful actress, but could they not find an Irish woman to play this part? I mean, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Saoirse Ronan movie, was she too busy? Then there’s Jamie Dornan, who’s from Belfast, stinking around sounding like a high school kid who got roped into playing the Irish guy on the school play because his Granny’s Granny was from Ireland. And, finally, Christopher Walken. I mean, why the hell is he in this?
As 2020 rolls to a close this is the last thing we needed. A really good rom-com with fantastic scenery would have been perfect. I’m not sure Dornan can act, but he’s dreamy looking, which never hurts. Blunt is a great actress. We could have streamed it on Prime while eating Shepard’s Pie and drinking Bailey’s out of the bottle and it would have been delightful. Instead, we get this nonsense. Apparently the movie takes place sometime after 2001 and yet Blunt’s character seems to be dressed in knock-off Mary Kate Danaher attire. And speaking of Mary Kate Danaher…is this movie supposed to a modern day version of The Quiet Man? If so, we’ve reached peak stop-making-remakes territory. Hardly any of the remakes are any good and it’s destroying younger generations who often only see the crappy remake. It’s like saying, “No, Son, no Daughter, you don’t need to go to Paris. We can just go to the World Pavilion at the Epcott Center. It’s cheaper and they have real ketchup there.” It’s a travesty.
But, back to the movie. Twitter and social media are all over it with some extraordinary comments. My absolute favorite might be:
The worst part is that the film is written by John Patrick Shanley who wrote Moonstruck, one of the best movies ever. Maybe the trailer is just an assortment of the worst, most ridiculous, stereotypical nonsense in the movie, but it’s 2020, so probably not. You can find the trailer somewhere. Whatever you do, make sure you read the comments because I’m sure they’ll be better than the movie. And, yes, I probably will see it just to see if it really is as bad as it looks.
